Promoting Your Blog Tastefully & Effectively

We all seem to struggle in the beginning or at some point in our blogging careers with getting new readers to stop by and interact. We also know that most people don’t enjoy being spammed with self promotional tweets, Facebook updates, or emails. So how are you supposed to promote you and your blog without spending money on paid advertising? Here are some fun and simple ways to get the word out about your blog:

Join a Community Forum

One of the best ways to promote your blog to people that are potential repeat visitors & commenter is to let them get to know you a bit. By joining a forum you can interact with a specialized niche of people interested in your opinions and personality. You don’t want to post promotional spam all over forums, instead include a link to your blog in your signature which will be included every single time you offer valuable feedback on a thread.

Offer to be a Guest Blogger

Another great way to reach a new audience and build some friendships is to offer to do some guest blogging for fellow bloggers. I know writing posts can be time consuming, but with these posts you really want to be the best you have to offer. These will act as samples of your blog all over the web that will lead people back to you for more. You can connect with bloggers on Twitter or on one of the forums you have recently joined.

Be Transparent When Sharing Links

You have to remember, one of the reasons people follow you on social media is to stay up to date with your blog. Don’t be afraid to say “Check out my latest post, I’d love your opinion!” once in a while. Simply by asking your readers to leave you some feedback will result in just that in most cases. It is more than acceptable to share a link to a new post but you create a much more interesting feed of information when you mix your own posts with other great content from other bloggers.

Participate in Twitter Chats

Chances are you are finding this very post because you at some pointed participated in, or had heard of, our own #BlogTrends Twitter chat. Chats provide you with a great opportunity to present yourself as an expert and a go-to source of quality information without ever sharing a link. #BlogTrends chat happens every Monday night at 9pm EST, come join us and show off your own blogging expertise!

Show Some Comment Love

Probably the most effective way to promote yourself and your blog is to comment on other blogger’s posts. Chances are you read quite a few posts every day, if you take the time to comment on some of those you will start to build relationships with those people. You are also leaving a permanent link to your blog on every page that you comment on and you are in a position to offer someone else the kind of feedback you want to see on your own.

Guest Apperances

Similar to guest blogging you can also get the word out by sharing your knowledge as a guest at any number of events. If you are just getting started you might not want to be front and center but you most certainly should attend the event if possible. This provides you with great place to network and an opportunity to cover the event for your blog. It is a good idea to get a small pack of business cards that contain your name, contact info, and a link to your blog. These are invaluable for connecting with the new people you meet later on.

Great ideas. I also welcome guest bloggers on my blog and have a Saturday link love post that features the links (with description of post) to bloggers who have been supportive. I have a large Facebook and Twitter following so I often share the posts of other bloggers through them. I do not mind (actually I am all about) supporting others (especially women) so, I think that has helped build my network.

Twitter! Twitter is a gold mine for connecting with like-minded individuals, finding new great blogs and sharing your own, and building a friendship with your readers. I don’t know where I’d be without it!

Great post! I find I get a lot of new readers from getting my projects featured on sites like Craftgossip or oneprettything. Lots of traffic but not as many comments as I would like.
    Thanks for the tips!

I agree with Katelyn, twitter is a great way to share your post with like minded people. I use hashtags a lot to get the word out. Hootsuite is another great tool that allows you to schedule tweets and facebook posts. An invaluable tool to driving traffic to your site is to comment on other bloggers post.

These are all such great tips — doing button swaps with other blogs that I love and read regularly has been a great yet subtle way to gain more readers.

I would love to guest blog, but sometimes think I’d feel weird asking rather than being invited? Any tips on how to go about this?

Great article!!! Very helpful tips for new bloggers like myself. I would love to make a guest appearance on someone’s blog and vice versa. I have a spin for comedy so if anyone doesn’t mind a born and raised New Yorker’s sense of humor I’m game 🙂

I started a blog fairly recently ( and it’s a slow process bringing in readers! I’ve found Facebook and Twitter very useful but ultimately you need to just keep posting and be true to yourself, don’t write for the sake of it but when you have a burning need to share something!

This was really helpful! I’m going to implement some of these for sure.

Great tips. I’ve been blogging for well over a year now, and am still learning everyday. I agree the most important factor in gaining new followers is to be engaged via comments/Twitter, etc.
