Take Your Word to the Chopping Block With These Simple Editing Tips

Take a tip from Nike: Just do it!  Editing is one of those essential parts of a blog that isn’t so glamorous.  It’s not fun and it’s lengthens the time you already spent brainstorming and creating the post.  It’s a pain, but take an extra ten minutes, and your blog credibility will be happy you did!  Follow these steps for the best way to edit your posts.

1. First look. View your post on preview mode.  Reread your written content.  Spell check, spell check, spell check!  Review the grammar.  Check formatting.  Sometimes spacing can be off when you play with html.

2. The Details. While in preview mode, double check links.  Make sure all text you wanted linked is properly done so.  This is a good time to review audio or video, if applicable.  Take a good look at your photos and make sure they are up to your standards.  Although it’s a hassle, if your photos are lacking in quality, it may be smart to edit the photos as well.

3. Last look. This is the point when you want to do a final gloss over.  If you have a friend, significant other, parent, or roommate, try to recruit them to take a quick look.  Generally it only takes a few minutes to read the post and a fresh set of eyes can always help.  After that, do you posting!

Great tips! I always read my posts out loud to help me find run on sentences and to help me place commas

I also read out loud. I have been told that the mind will automatically correct mistakes while reading to yourself, but not if you read out loud.

This is what I do. I’ve been rereading my posts in Preview mode. If I try to reread it in the textbox, it doesn’t work. I don’t know why. Haha! Plus, it’s always best to make sure a post looks how you want it before officially putting it up for readers.

Ooohh! I need to try this reading out loud biz. I’ve been doing all 3, but reading out loud sounds pretty genius! Wonder if my posts would make good bed time stories for the Kiddo? hehe

Thanks for the super helpful post, Lindsay!
