#BlogTrends – Guest Posting 101 – Jun 4

This week’s #BlogTrends chat is focused on guest blogging. Since the first #BlogTrends chat on October 17th 2011, we have all been able to make lots of great new connections, some of these connections might be perfect as guest bloggers or as places to offer a guest post of your own! Join us as we discuss how to track down ideal guest bloggers, how to manage them, and what to do if you just don’t like the post!

@gritandglamour: A1 As a guestie, you gain exposure. Featuring guests can help bolster your editorial calendar, especially if you’re on vacay. #blogtrends

@nouvelle: A1 It adds a new touch to your blog/someone else’s, introduces a new audience, & forces you to get creative #blogtrends

@CustomizedWalls: Plus it’s like authors…if you similar blogs guest write, chances are if you like 1 you may like both. #blogtrends

@PromiscuousLola: A1: Guest bloggers help keep you objective too. After a while you become a victim of your own personal prejudices/preferences. #blogtrends

Q2 What is the best way to find blogs to guest post on?Where should I find bloggers if I need guest posts while I’m on vacation? #BlogTrends

@DigitalKaitlyn: A2 Like @Blog_Trends just said, the forums have been useful for our members so far, as well as the monday #blogtrendschats!

@SheLikesRuffles: A2: Start with your readers! I always send out a few tweets asking if anyone is interested; usually fills up fast!#blogtrends

@CustomizedWalls: A2 A good start is blogs you read, comment on and have a relationship with writer. I wouldn’t ask a stranger#blogtrends

@OneWomansStyleE: A2 I was told to use the same approach as if you are applying for a job. Resume, writing samples, cover letter.#blogtrends

@backngroovemom: @Blog_Trends A2 blog circles are great for this and also reaching out to some of your most favorite ‘reads’#blogtrends #blogtrends

@HouseOfJeffers: A2 Creating friendships leads to asking buddies to guest post. And of course, the power of Twitter sure doesn’t hurt, either. #blogtrends

@justsitpretty: A2: I usually like to guest post on blogs that have a similar but different audience then mine to gain more exposure#blogtrends

@starcrossedsmil: A2 Ask around! Let your twitter friends know you’re looking for guest posts, look on @Blog_Trends forum, reach out to people! #blogtrends

@KatiePetix: A2 Twitter! Just ask! Aaaaaand http://t.co/lJ0is7wo of course! There is a forum just for guest blogging. #blogtrends

@Her_Castle: A2 This is where the networking with bloggers matters! If you have a network of bloggers you trust you can give them the job #blogtrends

@CreativelyYours: A2. Reach out to blogs that you frequently read and comment on,we see your comments/tweets so there is familarity#blogtrends

@PromiscuousLola: A2: The best place would be with bloggers you interact with often. There’s already a relationship, and you know their style. #blogtrends

@PromiscuousLola: Q2: You can also ask bloggers whose perspectives you admire, or who cover a topic you think your blog lacks.#blogtrends

@SarahUnstitched: A2, if u’ve built a relationship w/ other bloggers THEYLL often come 2 YOU when theyre looking 4 guests. Relationships=important #blogtrends

@SassyDianaMarie: A number of bloggers send out newsletters and this seems a perfect way to reach out and ask too! n #blogtrends

@blackblondeone: A2 I also like to give newer bloggers a chance to shine. We all have to start somewhere, right? #blogtrends#whatgoesaroundcomesaround

Q3 How do I best manage guest bloggers once I have chosen them? How much notice should I give guest bloggers when I need a post? #BlogTrends

@stephaniefusco: A3: Have a set schedule for when you’ll need guest-bloggers. Remember that they’re bloggers too and can get busy#blogtrends

@SheLikesRuffles: A3: I try to put the feelers out for guests about a month in advance. Email reminder 2 weeks before. Schedule posts 1 week out. #blogtrends

@justsitpretty: A3: Always plan ahead! I always prepare a full schedule if I plan to host more than one guest blogger before I approach them #blogtrends

@HouseOfJeffers: A3 Giving an outline might help guide the guest’s post. Ex. When I moved, I asked for travel- based posts. #blogtrends

@PromiscuousLola: Q3: Assign posts according to who will shine at what topic. #blogtrends

@justsitpretty: A3: I always contact them 2-4wks ahead of time & give them at least 2 wks to complete & return so that we can address any issues #blogtrends

@nouvelle: A3 Manage guest bloggers in an editorial calendar like you would for yr posts. A longer turn around time is key. #blogtrends

@blackblondeone: @blog_trends A3 I think it’s good to give a short description of what you want, what you expect, and deadlines.#blogtrends

@SassyDianaMarie: Def set a date! I see a deadline and I’m inclined to brainstorm until very close to such and then whip the article to shape 😉 #blogtrends

@KatiePetix: A3 Give them as much time as possible! Rushed content usually isn’t top notch, so give yourself and them enough lead time.#blogtrends

@blackblondeone: A3 It’s good to give instructions on how you want the post delivered, ie-html, word doc, etc. You might even give them a login.#blogtrends

@HouseOfJeffers: A3 Asking a guest blogger to promote the post isn’t something I do. I considerate great if they do but don’t mind if they don’t. #blogtrends

@starcrossedsmil: A3 If you’re asked to guest post & you don’t have time- be honest. Better than agreeing to do it, but not getting them the post! #blogtrends

Q4 How should I instruct my guest blogger to write a post on a particular subject? Am I allowed to edit their post?#BlogTrends

@SheLikesRuffles: A4: I always state I have the right to edit for grammar/spelling/minor things that won’t change their voice #blogtrends

@smalltwnfashion: @Blog_Trends A4 Keep the subject general but give specific ideas if needed. Besides grammar/spelling, keep edits to a minimum. #blogtrends

@HouseOfJeffers: A4 Make suggestions but offer freedom to create an idea of their own. After all, you want their voice to come through#blogtrends

@justsitpretty: A4: Be straight forward and ask them if they can produce what you want (your idea). It’s your blog you’re allowed to edit.#blogtrends

@smalltwnfashion: A4 You should do your research & read their blog before asking them to guest post – and so you’re not surprised by their voice. #blogtrends

@HouseOfJeffers: A4 Editting for spelling/grammar I feel is fine. But making revisions and major edits can be taken the wrong way.#blogtrends

@starcrossedsmil: A4 You want to give them some freedom. The idea is to have a fresh voice on your blog which it won’t be if you edit it too much! #blogtrends

@TyrasLilSis: A4 Even though it’s a guest post,it is still under your brand’s name&you will be held responsible for the post content too#blogtrends

@blackblondeone: A4 I expect posts I write will be edited, at least I hope they are. I’m a horrible proofer. #blogtrends

Q5 What if I’m unhappy with my guest blogger’s post? What do I do then? #BlogTrends

@Chasing_Joy: A5. Thank the guest blogger for there time and tell them you cannot use it. #blogtrends

@jstprfectbeauty: a5: perhaps one could hold a dialogue and come to some type of agreement to salvege the post? #blogtrends

@CM_Writer: @Blog_Trends A5: Kindly express to the person what you are unhappy with. People need critiques to better their blogging#blogtrends

@PromiscuousLola: A5: If that happens, you should discuss it w/the blogger and try to salvage it. Most people are open to constructive criticism. #blogtrends

@Her_Castle: A5 only option is to tell them & kindly say why. You can work out another topic, but don’t ignore & say nothing. That’s rude#blogtrends

@HouseOfJeffers: A5 Be honest yet tactful if asking or revisions. Keep in mind: this person put in time and effort to do YOU a favor.#blogtrends

@CustomizedWalls: A5. There is always a point where no editing can’t fix. You can say you just don’t think it is right for your audience.#blogtrends

@smalltwnfashion: A5 Be honest but not harsh. Thank them for the work & give them direction. If you can edit w/o losing their voice, do.#blogtrends

@KatiePetix: A5 Setting clear guidelines first will most often prevent a sticky situation. #blogtrends

@justsitpretty: A5: No one is going to care for your blog/brand like you are. If something won’t work or doesn’t fit – it just doesn’t#blogtrends

@nouvelle: A5 If it’s editing that needs ramping up – edit. If it’s not up to par, thank the blogger & say that the post will be on hold#blogtrends

@FashFirecracker: @Blog_Trends A5. most importantly be tactful and honest about the direction you want to take! #blogtrends

@SheLikesRuffles: A5: I think if you take the time to establish your expectations upfront, things typically come out well w/guest posts!#blogtrends

@ClosetFix: A5 I would honestly say that! If the point is to elevate each other then I would work w/ that person to create a better product#blogtrends

@blackblondeone: A5 As much as I want quality, I also want to keep it fun and lighthearted. I love my blog, but there’s a balance.#blogtrends

@ClosetFix: A5 If time is not an issue this may be a chance to help facilitate the growth of another blogger who may be less experienced#blogtrends
