I started the Sammy Davis Vintage Facebook fanpage way back in the dark ages of social media — December of 2009!
Over these past 2 1/2 years, I’ve learned tips and tricks to engaging my growing audience with inspiring and interesting posts about vintage style, thrift store shopping and positive living.
Here’s 5 easy “social shifts” you can make immediately when posting and engaging with your blog’s fan page. I promise that with consistent execution of these tips, that your page’s activity will flourish and your total Facebook likes will grow.
1.) How to Receive More Comments
THE SOCIAL SHIFT: Lead posts with a question.
WHY IT MATTERS: The attention span of a newsfeed browser is probably equivalent to that of a 2 year old’s — they simply grab and GO!
If you want your fanbase to respond to a question, grab their interest first thing by leading your post with that question. That way, fans are provoked to participate in a call-and-response action because the first thing they read was a request for their opinion.
Keep question posts short for the most successful response rate.
WHAT I DO: When I post a photo of the “mood boards” I create at the vintage store I manage, I lead each post with the direct question, “What is your favorite piece on this mood board?”
It’s an easy strategy of directing your fan’s attention to the visual at hand, and then receiving an emotionally-invested response because you’ve asked what they think.
Apply the technique to visuals which lend themselves to examination for the answer, and you’re on your way to becoming the most popular conversation in the room!
2.) How to Attract Attention in Newsfeeds
THE SOCIAL SHIFT: Add an illustrative photo to your update so that you’re never updating with just text or a link.
WHY IT MATTERS: To drive the most traffic from your fanpage to your blog, just posting a link isn’t going to cut it.
For the most click throughs, there needs to be some other incentive for clicking that teases what they are about to see on your blog. A link can get lost in the shuffle of Facebook’s photo porn, so it’s important that your URL stands out with an image beside it.
WHAT I DO: This photo illustrates how I attached a visually stimulating image when I shared the link to an article from my series Thrift Store Shopping Like a Pro. The visual is humorous and intriguing, which attracted fans to give the text a read and the link a click through.
When I want to re-promote the same post, I’ll use a different image so that it’s not repetitive for fans who may have already seen me promote the post earlier in the day.
3.) How to Reach More Fans
THE SOCIAL SHIFT: Strategically post at social surfing hours and days.
WHY IT MATTERS: It seems obvious, but when you want the most activity on an update you should press post when the most people are going to be checking out their newsfeeds.
WHAT I DO: I’ve found that the rise and shine hour (7:30-9AM), after lunch hour (1PM-2PM) and end of day hour (4:30-5:30PM) are best traffic slots during the work day.
In the evening, shoot for 8PM or later and up to 11PM, when people are curled up with their laptops before hitting the sack.
On the weekend, I’ve found that the best time to post is Sunday mid-evening. People are catching up after unplugging from digital communication for the past 36 hours. Refreshed from time away, they’re more likely to be in a mood for surfing the ‘net, thus scrolling down their Facebook feeds to see what’s worth clicking.
Note: All time references are in EST. Remember that if your fanbase is nation or worldwide, you will still reach a segment who are awake and alert to receive your updates!
4.) How to Grow a Loyal Audience
THE SOCIAL SHIFT: Respond to fans and ask questions within a post’s comment threads.
WHY IT MATTERS: The key to building a loyal, sticky audience is to connect with them on a personal level. Whether it’s in the comments of your blog, YouTube videos, Instagram updates or whilst tweeting, the good feeling a follower gets when you connect with them is what will keep them coming back for more of you.
The same can be said for building a sticky Facebook audience. All too often though I see companies, brands and bloggers post a great update and then despite a flurry of comments, say absolutely nothing in reply. That commenter must feel like they’re talking out loud in an empty room — how depressing!
WHAT I DO: When I pose a question or content on a particularly sensitive piece of subject matter, I do so when I can be active on the comment thread ASAP. This helps to create a real-time conversation on the thread that can potentially make the post go viral and attract new fans to your page.
In this picture, I asked fans “what vintage celebrity hottie is their favorite,” using a sexy photo of ‘70s fashion icon Jimi Hendrix to catch their attention. As soon as comments appeared, I immediately replied back to fans and participated in the discussion real-time.
As fans see that you are commenting back right away, they’re more likely to take a moment to comment themselves. Before you know it, you’ve got 50+ comments on a post and thanks to the viral effects of that energy, a few new likes of your page, too.
5.) How to Get Viral for More Likes
THE SOCIAL SHIFT: Create entertaining and interactive “post” games using photo editing software.
WHY IT MATTERS: Whether you use images from Pinterest or that you’ve taken on your personal camera or iPhone, use photo editing software to design illustrative visuals to create interactive interest that lends itself to an emotionally-charged debate in the comments.
WHAT I DO: This photos is a triple-paned photo I created after snapping shots of a customer trying on numerous pink pieces in my vintage store.
The fact that she looked arguably fabulous in all of them and that they were all pink was reason enough to create one standalone image that would help to create a game around the question, “Which piece should this vintage lover buy?”
It becomes a game because the audience doesn’t know which one she ultimately bought. Their opinion feels valid because it could sway her ultimate decision, although the reality is she’s already bought her piece!
After a few hours I chime in to let the audience know which piece she ended up taking home. Can you guess which one that was?
